| KansasBio Names Congressman Jerry Moran “LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR” ________________ |
| |
 |
On Thursday, August 20, KansasBio will honor Congressman Jerry Moran
with its first “Legislator
of the Year” award,
which recognizes a
public official from Kansas who has demonstrated leadership on behalf of the bioscience industry. |
This prestigious award, which is voted on by KansasBio’s Public Policy Committee with input from KansasBio’s Industry Advisory Panel, will be awarded to Congressman Moran at the BIG THINKER Reception being held at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, Saint Francis Campus, in the Holt Conference Room – Room 2522.
Congressman Moran represents Kansas' 1st Congressional District, and he is in his seventh term of serving the people of the great state of Kansas. He is an ardent supporter of the National Bio & Agro-Defense Facility and the bioscience initiative in Kansas. Most recently he has shown strong leadership in protecting the bioscience innovation cycle by being the first Kansas congressional member to sign on as a co-sponsor of Rep. Eshoo's bill, the Pathway for Biosimilars Act.
The reception will be held from 4:30-6:30pm, with the award
presentation occurring at 5:30pm. The BIG THINKER Reception is
open to all KansasBio members or potential members. |

KANSAS RANKS NINTH FOR
BIOTECHNOLOGY STRENGTH ________________
Kansas received its ranking in the May edition of the Business Facilities magazine and appears to have gained some momentum in the category because of Kansas' selection to house the $650 million Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan. This is further evidence of Kansas’ success in dedicating resources toward the bioscience initiative. These are monumental results for a state ranked 30th in population. |

The GAO released its final report yesterday and, as expected, continued to miss many key facts regarding the reality of modern research facilities and the need to ensure the best science
possible to combat diseases. |

KansasBio Sponsors Industry Tour for K-State Graduate Students____________________________
On July 22, 2010, KansasBio members once again opened their doors to K-State graduate students in the summer program. This is the third year that Kansasbio has sponsored this important industry tour, which has allowed these students to experience a full range of life science companies, from animal health and nutrition, food safety, plant science and human health drug development. Each year we receive feedback from the students who attend, each grateful for the experience to see the science in action among our bioscience industry companies. This year’s K-State attendees were: Michael Hinkin, Megan Miller, Lananh Nguyen, Gilpatrick Hornsby, Josephine Schamp, Anjelica Rivers, Sarah Elkins, Tina Graver, Vanessa Maycumber, Ruben Diaz, Kayla Bell, Alison Doyungan, Amy Rouinfar, and Luz Cumba. KansasBio thanks this year’s tour sponsors: Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Stowers Institute, and CyDex Pharmaceuticals.
